HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (Sept. 27, 2016) — Dr. Jack Groppel, an internationally recognized authority and pioneer in the science of human performance, will become the Health & Wellness Advisor for the Tennis Industry. As the representative and spokesperson on the Tennis Industry Association (TIA) Board of Directors, Dr. Groppel will work with industry partners, including the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA), Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), International Health, Racquet, & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), and others, on strategies to best convey the health and fitness messaging of tennis.

Dr. Groppel, who is the co-founder of the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute, has a long history in tennis, including 16 years as chair of the National Sport Science Committee for the USTA.

“I’m thrilled to be able to give back to the game that has given me so much,” Dr. Groppel said. “I look forward to working with the Tennis Industry Association and all of the industry partners in helping to highlight the health, fitness and wellness benefits tennis can offer people of all ages.”

“With Jack’s background and expertise in fitness performance and health, the entire tennis industry will benefit from the strategic support he’ll bring,” said TIA President Jeff Williams.

Dr. Groppel is the co-chair of the Global Alliance for Health & Performance and is professor of Kinesiology & Community Health at the University of Illinois. He’s addressed the issue of worksite wellness and performance at U.N. and U.S. Congress policy events, and represented the worksite wellness industry at the Surgeon General’s Call to Action on Walking and Walkable Communities.

“We are very fortunate in the tennis industry to have someone of Dr. Groppel’s experience and caliber helping to push all the great benefits of tennis and reasons to play this sport,” said TIA Executive Director Jolyn de Boer. “No one has published more articles and research on the health benefits of tennis than he has.”

In March, Dr. Groppel was a key presenter at the TIA State of the Industry Forum during the Miami Open, held in conjunction with the third annual TIA Tennis Owners & Managers Conference, on using the health and fitness benefits of the sport to get more people active and playing tennis.

In April, the tennis industry became the first sports industry to endorse the new National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP) and the CEO Pledge for Physical Activity when the plan was unveiled in Washington, D.C. The NPAP was announced in a press conference at the National Press Club, followed by a Congressional briefing at the U.S. Capitol. During the announcement, the sport of tennis was cited by Dr. Groppel as “the first of hopefully many entire sports to endorse this pledge and this plan.”

This past August, Dr. Groppel participated in the annual TIA Tennis Forum in New York City during the US Open. As the National Spokesperson for the CEO Pledge for Physical Activity (part of the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity), Dr. Groppel expanded the Pledge with the signing by International Tennis Federation President David Haggerty and USTA President Katrina Adams.

Along with his position with the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute, Dr. Groppel is the co-chair of the Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO) Health, Performance & Productivity Study Committee. He wrote the book “The Corporate Athlete” on achieving the pinnacle of corporate performance, and he’s been featured in the New York Times, Fortune, Forbes, Shape, Fast Company and Huffington Post, among other publications.

Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning Launches Global CFSC Certification

With the mission of "making good coaches great and great coaches even better", Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning has launched a global Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC) certification. With over 1,500 coaches certified across the United States, England, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Japan and Dubai, the feedback so far has been incredible.

Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning, was recently named the #1 Gym in America by Men’s Health Magazine. Having trained hundreds of elite and professional athletes, thousands of young athletes, along with tons of kids and adults just looking to get in better shape, Mike Boyle and his facility are known in the sports performance and fitness world as the originator of functional strength training. The focus now is on becoming the new "Gold Standard" in the fitness industry by certifying coaches and trainers around the globe through the Certified Functional Strength Coach (CFSC) certification.

Boyle has always questioned the validity of fitness certifications because most consist of only a written test, or weekend seminar. The lack of emphasis on program design, coaching strategies and ability to properly demonstrate skills correctly does not always result in quality fitness professionals. The CFSC has quickly become the gold standard for Strength and Conditioning coaches around the world due to it's comprehensive and practical approach.

CFSC certification requirements include a 1-Day CFSC On-Site-Training and practical exam along with studying the course materials that are provided online and passing an online exam before attending the practical event. A major component missing in many strength and conditioning certifications is the absence of a "practical" component. With the CFSC, it is required for applicants to not only attend an On-Site- Training, but also to pass a practical exam at the end of the day. To pass the certification, each coach must prove that they can make the moves, are capable of demonstration, are able to give clear and concise coaching cues, and be proficient in the world renowned MBSC systemized approach to coaching and programming.

Included in the certification fee is the availability to access the valuable online

database of lectures, movement videos, and Mike Boyle’s Advances in Functional Training eBook. Having the study material online makes all information easily accessible and affordable. During the practical event the MBSC program is broken down step by step and includes; the warm up, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), corrective circuit, medball progressions, plyometrics, and functional strength training.

Boston, MA - October 19, 2016: The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), in collaboration with the Monday Campaigns, has released the Monday Mile Starter Kit for health club operators. Move It Monday, an international fitness campaign run by the Monday Campaigns, focuses on encouraging people of any fitness level to start their week by being physically active on Monday. As part of Move It Monday, the Monday Mile encourages people to walk a mile every Monday as part of their physical activity routine.

The new Monday Mile Starter Kit is designed to help health clubs promote the Monday Mile in their facilities, and to leverage the program to boost engagement. The toolkit includes:

  • Instructions on how to jumpstart a mile walking program with club members and prospects
  • Tips for incorporating the Monday Mile in multiple types of settings in addition to the health club, such as a school, workplace, or community setting
  • Sample social media posts
  • Route planning tools
  • Graphics to use around the club and route

This is the second IHRSA Member Benefit created jointly by IHRSA and the Monday Campaigns. In 2014, IHRSA and the Monday Campaigns released the Move It Monday Toolkit for IHRSA members, focused on harnessing the power of Monday's motivation to be more active and engaged with the club all week long. Both IHRSA and the Monday Campaigns are excited about another opportunity to work together to help get more people active in their communities.

Peggy Neu, The Monday Campaigns president, said, “It’s exciting to partner with IHRSA, this time encouraging the association’s members to use our Monday Mile Starter Kit to get more people walking. With the Monday Mile, individuals and communities can jumpstart their week on a healthy track. Everyone benefits from the exercise, as well as from the camaraderie that walking together brings.”

Joe Moore, IHRSA President & CEO, echoed this sentiment, saying “It is great to work with the Monday Campaigns to create tools our clubs can use to engage with their members and help them meet their goals. Walking can be a great entry point to more physical activity or a good way to cool down from a tough class, as well as an opportunity for social interaction and community building. IHRSA clubs are well positioned to get more people moving and walking in their communities with this new resource.”

The toolkit is available for IHRSA members at ihrsa.org/monday-mile.

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association’s (IHRSA) 16th annual European Congress wrapped up on 20 October in Seville, Spain, with more than 500 delegates from 29 countries.

“IHRSA is especially grateful to Maria Angeles and her team at MAS, who served as the local host for the event,” said Rasmus Ingerslev, Chair of the IHRSA Board of Directors, in his opening remarks. “They helped us find a great venue, advised on local attractions, and arranged the club tours—a highlight of the Congress for many attendees.”

In his opening keynote address, sponsored by Technogym, David Robertson, Ph.D., told attendees, “Whether you are a start-up or a Forbes 500 firm, sustainable innovation can be your key to success. Radical thinking can put you out of business—innovation doesn’t necessarily need to disrupt or change the game drastically.” Robertson is an author, professor of practice at the Wharton School, and a global innovation and IT consultant.

Marcos Eguillor, managing partner of BinaryKnowledge and professor at IE Business School, delivered the closing keynote address, sponsored by Keiser Corporation. “In the current market situation, it is no longer enough to offer good service—you need to adapt your business to a customer that is familiarized with technology, accustomed to mobility, and claiming services in line with the twenty-first century,” Eguillor said.

Among the many highlights of the programme were:

  • The presentation of the IHRSA European Club Leadership Award to Gabriel Saez Irigoyen, Chairman and CEO of Ingefit/ GO FIT, Spain.
  • The 3rd Annual IHRSA Europe CEO Forum, which was run in conjunction with the Congress.
  • The Second UFIT (Universal Fitness Innovation & Transformation) Conference. UFIT is a global social change movement, led by the UNESCO Chair in the Institute of Technology Tralee, Ireland, aiming to increase fitness opportunities for all, in particular people with disabilities.
  • More than a dozen additional seminars presented by industry operators and experts on a range of topics pertinent to the running of a successful health club.
  • A Sponsor Showcase and seminars that helped club executives and leading suppliers to connect one-to-one.
  • A tour of some of Seville's leading health clubs.

Club reinvestment and profit center analysis as well as income statement and balance sheet data are also provided.

"IHRSA's annual Industry Data Survey results show how leading club operators stand out, posting strong performance in financial and membership indicators,” said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. “According to the latest survey, club operators who allocated nearly 22% of total revenue to club reinvestment, including fitness equipment, office, and facility & grounds, outperformed the overall sample in terms of net membership growth, retention, and revenue growth.”

Ninety club companies, representing more than 4,800 locations, participated in the IDS. Overall, clubs posted revenue growth of 4.1% from 2014 to 2015. Member retention and net membership growth were recorded at 71.4% and 2.4%, respectively. As a whole, participating clubs indicated reinvesting 5.6% of total revenue. Top performers, who typically reinvested 21.5% of total revenue, posted revenue growth of 4.9%, net membership growth of 6.2%, and had a member retention rate of 77.8%.

Profiles of Success also provides performance analysis for eight health club profit centers. Key profit center findings include:

  • All clubs reported generating a median of 8.4% of total revenue from personal training and 1.1% of total revenue from small group training.
  • In addition to personal and small group training, the top performing profit centers among all responding clubs are racquet, spa, and pro-shop/retail.
  • Multipurpose clubs generated 4.8% of total revenue from racquet.
  • Fitness-only clubs generated a greater percentage of total revenue from pro-shop/retail than multipurpose clubs (2.6% vs. 1.5%).

“With Profiles of Success, club operators can compare their performance results across profit centers, membership growth and traffic as well as income and expense categories,” said Melissa Rodriguez, IHRSA’s senior research manager. “Along with The IHRSA Health Club Consumer Report, Profiles is an annual must-have publication for any club operator seeking to better understand health club performance, improve insights on fitness consumers, and, ultimately, grow their business.”

Profiles of Success is based upon membership and financial data for 2015 and 2014, provided voluntarily by 90 club companies, representing 4,865 facilities. The report provides key performance indicators for several club types: fitness-only, multipurpose, independent, and multi-chain facilities as well as breakouts by club size and monthly dues. A snapshot of health club consumer participation and demographics are also included. In addition, the publication contains a profit center section that analyzes revenue streams from personal and small group training, racquet sports, spas, pro shop/retail, food & beverage, children's/youth programs, and aquatics/pool.
