Cardio Tennis Participation Surges In Latest National Physical Activity Council Survey

Ranked No. 1 in growth in a study of 118 sports, this tennis-based group fitness activity is helping millions of Americans achieve their health and wellness goals.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (June 29, 2017) — More and more Americans are choosing Cardio Tennis, a high-energy group fitness workout that combines the best features of tennis with cardiovascular exercise, as their means to get healthy and fit. In the latest national survey of 118 sports and activities, Cardio Tennis was ranked No. 1 in year-over-year growth in terms of participation.

The annual sports participation study, conducted by the Physical Activity Council (PAC), showed that Cardio Tennis participation in the U.S. jumped 16.7 percent from 2015 to 2016, to more than 2.12 million participants. Cardio Tennis has seen a 156 percent increase since first being measured by the PAC study in 2008.

Developed by the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) and Tennis Industry Association (TIA) in 2005, Cardio Tennis delivers a full-body, calorie-burning workout. “We are very pleased with how Cardio Tennis has been growing, both in the U.S. and globally,” says TIA Executive Director Jolyn de Boer. “Cardio Tennis plays to Americans’ health and fitness preferences, and also helps tennis coaches and facilities grow their player base.”

“Cardio Tennis is a very social group fitness class that uses tennis to provide aerobic and anaerobic workouts,” says Cardio Tennis Global Education Director Michele Krause. “More than 3,000 tennis professionals are delivering Cardio Tennis in the U.S.”

The activity on the court uses tennis balls with slightly lower pressure than regular yellow tennis balls. “These balls level the playing field for all participants and allow players to hit many more shots than they would with yellow tennis balls,” says Krause. “When you combine all these ‘touches’ on the ball with the movement of getting to the ball and recovering, you have a workout in which it’s possible to burn 500 to 1,000 calories safely in an hour on court—all while improving your tennis skills and having a lot of fun.”

A key to Cardio Tennis is for players to use a heart-rate monitor to ensure they’re within the proper “zone” for improved fitness and performance. “Cardio Tennis instructors are trained in making sure participants are warming up, playing, and cooling down properly to achieve their best results safely,” says Chris Ojakian, executive director of racquet sports for Elite Racquet Sports of Los Angeles and a longtime global trainer for Cardio Tennis. “It’s gratifying when players tell me they’re achieving their fitness and weight-loss goals because of the workout they get playing Cardio Tennis.”

The “group” aspect of a Cardio Tennis session also is important. “With six to eight players on a court in a Cardio Tennis workout, there’s a real team camaraderie to the session,” says Heather Silvia Killingsworth, president of the Silvia Tennis Academy in the Atlanta area and a Cardio Tennis global trainer. “What’s great is that players will not only do Cardio Tennis with their friends and teammates, but participants also meet new people, too, who all share a common goal to get healthier and fitter.”

Managed by the TIA, Cardio Tennis also is spreading around the world, with formal partnerships with tennis associations in the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy and most recently, India.

“We think we’ll continue to see Cardio Tennis participation increase, as more and more Americans becoming concerned about the ‘inactivity pandemic’ and the rise in obesity rates in the U.S.,” de Boer says. “Tennis is one of the healthiest activities. In fact, this industry recently created a Tennis Health & Wellness Task Force to help promote the health, fitness, wellness and life benefits of the sport.”

Tennis has historically been called ‘the sport for a lifetime,’” and according to world-renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines, there’s no doubt that tennis is one of the best sports to play—at any age.

In fact, an Oxford University study released last fall that followed more than 80,000 people for an average of nine years determined that of all sports surveyed—including swimming, aerobics and biking—those who played racquet sports such as tennis were least likely to die over the study period. The study showed that participation in a racquet sport such as tennis decreases early mortality risk due to heart disease by 56 percent.

According to the PAC study, 48 percent of all tennis players in 2016 described their fitness level as good, compared to 25.4 percent of the U.S. population overall. The 2017 Physical Activity Council Participation Report surveyed 118 sports and activities. The annual report is produced by a partnership of eight of the major governing bodies and trade associations in the U.S. sports and leisure industry.

More than 65,000 health clubs in region serve nearly 20 million members

Boston, MA - July 12, 2017 - Today, the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) released the English and Portuguese versions of The IHRSA Latin American Report (Second Edition) sponsored by Hoist Fitness. The Spanish version of the report has been available since March. This update to the groundbreaking 2012 report, was again produced in collaboration with Mercado Fitness (Argentina) with supported from Fitness Brasil.

The IHRSA Latin American Report is the most comprehensive examination of key Latin American health club markets. The 18 Latin American markets analyzed in the report generate US$6 billion in revenue from more than 65,000 clubs. Nearly 20 million Latin Americans are members of a health club.

“The health club landscape in Latin America is dynamic and has undergone significant developments since 2012,” said Guillermo Velez, editor and director of Mercado Fitness. “In addition to the growth of the low-cost segment, other developments, including economic indicators, increasingly savvy consumers, technology, the boutique phenomenon, and professionalization have all impacted and shaped the industry in Latin America.”

Along with analysis of the market landscape, the report contains an in-depth chapter on the impact of tax law on health clubs in Latin America. While tax law varies across Latin American countries, the burden of complying with regulations jeopardizes profitability of clubs in the region. In Brazil, tax-exempt incentives for health clubs are lacking as club operators are required to pay several taxes. Health clubs in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico must pay a Value Added Tax (VAT) that often exceeds 15%.

The IHRSA Latin American Report is an indispensable tool for club operators, investors, and market analysts,” said Jacqueline Antunes, IHRSA’s senior manager of Latin America. “Club operators can use the report to identify trends and areas for growth, while investors can use this valuable resource to identify profitable opportunities in the region. Finally, analysts and other stakeholders can rely on the report to explore the state of the industry and outlook for health clubs in Latin America.”

“The new report is a great resource for club operators and suppliers,” added Waldyr Soares, president of Fitness Brasil. “It is sure to be discussed by industry leaders in São Paulo at IHRSA/Fitness Brasil in August and throughout the region later this year.”

The IHRSA Latin American Report (Second Edition) (77 pages) is available at ihrsa.org/latin-america-report in English, Portuguese and Spanish as a PDF. Contact Jacqueline Antunes, IHRSA’s senior manager Latin America at ja@ihrsa.org or +1 617-951-0055 ext. 171 with questions or to order by phone.

In related news, the IHRSA State of the Mexican Health and Fitness Industry Report (64 pages) is available at ihrsa.org/research-reports as a PDF in Spanish and English. Published in December 2016, this report is the first comprehensive publication of the fitness market in Mexico.

Fight to Expand PA Sales Tax to Health Club Memberships Far From Over

$

August 2, 2017 – Boston, MA – Last week, Pennsylvania health clubs were alerted to the fact that a state sales tax imposition on health club memberships is still in play.

On July 25, Governor Tom Wolf held an unplanned Facebook Q & A session, during which he vocalized his support for property tax relief. Wolf’s announcement aligns with the Senate’s continuous effort to replace property taxes with an expansion of the state sales tax to include health club memberships.

If Senate Bill 76 advances in the General Assembly, Pennsylvania clubs would be required to charge a 7% sales tax on all membership accounts beginning January 1, 2018.

Because the state is currently in the midst of a budget stalemate, legislators have temporarily shifted their focus away from Senate Bill 76 until they can reach an agreement on a new revenue package to include in the new fiscal year budget. However, just because this bill is currently on hold, does not mean that this issue has been resolved.

In Pennsylvania, proposals to expand the state sales tax to health club memberships are common. IHRSA stopped the implementation of a number of billssimilar to Senate Bill 76—in 2015 and 2016, saving state health clubs approximately $35,000 per club. Because the sales tax proposal has not passed, clubs have also benefitted in other ways—businesses are running smoothly and are less concerned about declining numbers in areas like sales and member retention.

To make matters worse, once a sales tax proposal becomes law in one state, other states canand often douse it as an example to follow suitregardless of whether passing such a proposal would be beneficial long term.

We are seeing legislation that would impact the industry in states we have never worked in before ... So, if you operate in a state where you thought, ‘I don’t have to worry about a law that will hurt my business’ think again,” said Helen Durkin, IHRSA’s EVP of public policy.

Taxing physical activity creates a disincentive for individuals, families, and communities that wish to better their health by engaging in regular exercise and making healthy choices. Government officials should be encouraging participation in physical activity, not discouraging it by increasing costs associated with these services.

If you are a club operator (in Pennsylvania or elsewhere) and are facing a sales tax threat, please contact your representative and let them know that you oppose a tax on healthy lifestyles. And, if you are looking for other ways to get involved or have additional questions about this issue, please contact Suzanne Trainor, IHRSA’s government relations coordinator.

AUSTRALIA August 2, 2017 – MYZONE today reports the positive results of a recent gamification study performed by 12RND Fitness in Australia. The study showed an increase in every single metric, for every club who participated, with members training for longer periods of time, more often, and at a higher effort level.

The study took place during a 21-day period at fourteen 12RND Fitness facilities and involved more than 800 members. Utilizing MYZONE technology, 12RND Fitness reviewed the exercise data of its members involved during the 21-day challenge period and compared it to their exercise data 21 days prior to the challenge to assess the impact the challenge had on its members exercise behavior.

On average, members registered 38% more workouts during the study, burned 38% more calories, and earned 41% more MYZONE effort points or MEPs, which are awarded based on the members effort level for each minute of exercise, compared to the previous period. For some clubs members increased over 80% compared to the baseline period. In addition, analysis showed overall exercise was 16% higher in the post challenge period compared to pre-challenge, suggesting the positive effect of the challenge continued post challenge.

This supports other studies which have demonstrated the effect of gamification and MYZONE in increasing visit frequency and effort, in turn driving member retention and results. Through the MYZONE system, facilities can create in-club challenges, team vs. team challenges, as well as challenge other MYZONE facilities.

“MYZONE is an important part of our product and member experience,” said Tim West, Founder of 12RND Fitness, It helps our members track their intensity and regularity of their workouts as well as enhancing social accountability and camaraderie amongst the club community. In this case it gave members a chance to represent their tribe in our club vs club challenge and members jumped at the chance to be involved. “

About Crossfit:

CrossFit is a fitness regimen developed by Greg Glassman over several decades. Glassman, CrossFit's Founder and CEO, was the first person in history to define fitness in a meaningful, measurable way: increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. He then created a program specifically designed to improve fitness and health.

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life. They move the largest loads the longest distances, so they are ideal for maximizing the amount of work done in the shortest time. Intensity is essential for results and is measurable as work divided by time—or power. The more work you do in less time, or the higher the power output, the more intense the effort. By employing a constantly varied approach to training, functional movements and intensity lead to dramatic gains in fitness.

The community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together is a key component of why CrossFit is so effective, and it gave birth to a global network of CrossFit affiliates that number over 13,000. Harnessing the natural camaraderie, competition and fun of sport or game yields an intensity that cannot be matched by other means.

The CrossFit Games are the world’s premier test to find the Fittest on Earth™. They are world-renowned as a grueling test for the toughest athletes on Earth as well as a thrilling experience for spectators. Since its inception in 2007, the CrossFit Games have become “one of the fastest growing sports in America,” according to Forbes.

The Games are a playing field where the fittest athletes are given a chance to distinguish themselves through consistently exceptional performances. In a single weekend, the CrossFit Games test athletes’ capabilities across broad time and modal domains. A wide variety of different events are intentionally included. In order to be satisfied that the CrossFit Games winners are truly the Fittest on Earth, we need to be confident the champions would also win other good tests of fitness.

Fitness First Asia has announced the launch of a brand new digital membership, available to both members and non-members, in a bid to broaden the reach of the Fitness First brand and inspire people to stay active wherever they are.

The digital membership is delivered through the CustomFit app, Fitness First’s version of the award-winning Wexer Mobile app. This app will also now allow Fitness First to live-stream group fitness classes – from its clubs, direct to users wherever they are, and provide a library of hundreds of on-demand virtual classes.

The app – Wexer Mobile – was created as a white label mobile solution for operators to extend their reach beyond the four walls of the gym. Additional modules in the app include a workout builder, class bookings, challenges, results-focused programmes and a tool for PTs to prescribe bespoke workout plans for their clients.

Simon Flint, CEO of Evolution Wellness – the parent company for both Fitness First Asia and Celebrity Fitness following a recent merger – says: “Fitness First understands that in today’s busy life there may be occasions where members won’t always be able to make it to the gym, so we want to provide tools and content which will allow them to stay on track with their fitness regimen. We’re keen to continue to help keep people inspired wherever they may be – at home, at work, or while travelling – through fitness-rich experiences.

“This is why we have chosen to partner with Wexer in this unique way.”

Wexer CEO Paul Bowman adds: “Our key objective is to help clubs stay relevant in a world where consumers are increasingly looking online for fitness inspiration and content.

“Wexer Mobile is a digital extension of the club’s offering. It allows the operator to maintain its relationship with members 24/7, while also expanding the reach of the business by engaging a new cohort of non-gym-goers.”

About Wexer

Through a range of digital products and services Wexer helps club groups connect with members both inside and outside the four walls of the gym. The original product, Wexer Virtual, features world-class exercise content and allows 24h usage of group exercise and cycling studios. The gym floor product, Wexer Trainer, helps clubs activate their functional space. Wexer also offer Wexer Mobile, an app, which allows streaming of both live and pre-recorded classes as well as ‘on-the-fly’ exercise programming which can be used whenever, wherever.
